“The Great Island Tradition”
Come celebrate the prestigious Gold Cup Parade, the largest street parade in eastern Canada! This year’s theme is ”Parade of Heroes” to highlight the many heroes we have on our beautiful Island. A hero mean different things to different people – for kids it could be a super hero or parent, to others a community hero, cancer survivor, a veteran, first responders or teacher. We invite all parade participants to be creative and find a way to showcase their heroes.
The 2013 “Island Heroes of the Year” are PEI’s Korean War Veterans. They will be serving as this year’s parade marshals.
The Gold Cup and Saucer Race (1960) and The Gold Cup Parade (1962) were founded by Frank Acorn and Bill Hancox with the purpose of reviving Old Home Week, focusing attention on PEI’s harness racing industry, and providing exciting entertainment for both Islanders and summer visitors. The Parade has been every year since that time and has become the feature event of summer season on the Island!
Every year, hundreds of entries wind their way through downtown featuring to the delight of children of all ages. The Parade features marching bands, floats, antique cars, giant balloons, clowns, and horses – there is something for everyone!
