Gold Cup Parade Grand Marshals Announced
The theme for the 2015 Gold Cup Parade is The Year of Sport, Ray Murphy, Chair of the 2015 Parade Committee is pleased to announce this year’s Parade Marshals are Special Olympians Jenna Smith of Ellerslie and John Paynter of Freetown. Recently, these two talented athletes travelled to Los Angeles for the Special Olympic World Games. Smith competed in Bowling where she won three gold medals in singles, doubles and team competition, and Paynter posted personal-best times in two fourth-place finishes in the 100 and 200 metres.
“We are very pleased to honor these two individuals as they represent sports excellence in Prince Edward Island. Please join me in congratulating Jenna and John on their recent accomplishments and we look forward to celebrating them in the 2015 Gold Cup Parade on Friday, August 21.” Smith and Paynter will lead the Gold Cup Parade through the streets of Charlottetown beginning at 10:00 a.m. from North River Road. Governor General David Johnston marked 2015 as The Year of Sport, celebrating the role sport plays in our Canadian identity and the proclamation is encouraging Canadians to participate in and seek the benefits of sport.
